Their music ranges from traditional Celtic pieces to folk songs and more pop-inspired tracks. They have been popularly described as “Riverdance for the voice,” an allusion to the popular Irish theatrical dance show. Others have also compared them to Clannad and Enya, both well-known folk and New Age performers.

The group was launched in 2004 by Sharon Browne and former Riverdance director David Downes. There was a growing interest in America for Celtic culture at the time, and their idea was to tap into this market by blending Celtic music into the structure of pop groups such as the Pussycat Dolls and the Spice Girls. Browne and Downes put together a group of five members: vocalists Órla Fallon, Chloë Agnew, Méav Mhaolchatha, and Lisa Kelly, and fiddler Máiréad Nesbitt. Ní Mhaolchatha left the group in 2007 and has been replaced by Lynn Hilary.

Celtic Woman has released five albums to date: Celtic Woman, A Christmas Celebration, A New Journey, The Greatest Journey, and Songs from the Heart. Since their launch, Celtic Woman has completed several world tours and sold more than 6 million records, making them one of the most successful musical groups Ireland has produced.

Their first album reached the top spot on the Billboard World Music Chart within weeks of its release, and stayed there for a record-breaking 81 weeks. Much of its popularity is attributed to the well-publicized recording at The Helix in Dublin, and the subsequent concert aired on a 90-minute PBS special in 2005. The two successive albums also topped the World Music list and made the top 10 on the Billboard 200.

The group regularly performs a mix of traditional Irish and contemporary music, as well as many pieces created by Downes himself. Besides group performances, their tours also include solos by each of the members, allowing them all to showcase their talents. Among the tour favorites are “Danny Boy,” “You Raise Me Up,” “Ave Maria,” and covers of “Harry’s Game” by Clannad and “Orinoco Flow” by Enya.

Following the launch of their debut album in 2005, Celtic Woman made over a dozen live performances in the U.S. They completed a bigger tour with their third album, A New Journey, performing in 88 U.S. cities in 2007 and close to 80 in 2008. In 2009, they did a special tour in Isle of Hope, Georgia, featuring original music by Downes and “You Raise Me Up” author Brendan Graham.

Celtic Woman is currently on tour to promote their latest compilation, Songs from the Heart. The tour kicked off in February 2010 and has so far stopped in several Canadian cities. They are set to appear in U.S. venues later this year, with performances in New York, New Jersey, Maine, Philadelphia, Kentucky, Virginia, Montana, Oklahoma, Missouri, Iowa, Kansas, Nebraska, South Dakota, North Dakota, Wisconsin, Oregon, Montana, California, Arizona, Nevada, Colorado, and New Mexico. An Australian tour is also scheduled for October and will run until November 3.
